How Florida workers' comp impairment benefits work

Florida uses Impairment Income Benefits (IIBs) for permanent impairment. IIBs are paid at 75% of your temporary total disability (TTD) rate (which is itself 66⅔% of your average weekly wage, subject to state minimums and maximums), for a number of weeks determined by your impairment percentage under the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, 6th Edition.

Florida's formula multiplies the IIB rate by the number of "impairment weeks" assigned to your rating. Unlike some states, Florida does not have a separate body-part schedule for PPD settlements — the impairment rating drives the benefit duration. Settlements are negotiated around the IIB calculation plus future medical needs, and Florida does not generally pay for pain and suffering in workers' comp.

Frequently asked questions

What are Impairment Income Benefits? IIBs are weekly payments for permanent impairment after you reach maximum medical improvement (MMI). They are paid at 75% of your TTD rate for a duration based on your impairment rating under the AMA Guides 6th Ed.

Does Florida pay for pain and suffering in workers' comp? No. Florida workers' compensation covers medical expenses and wage-loss benefits only; there is no recovery for pain and suffering.

How do I settle a Florida workers' comp case? Florida settlements are typically negotiated lump-sum agreements that resolve indemnity and/or medical benefits. Once settled, the claim is generally closed, so future medical needs should be considered before signing.
