How Illinois workers' compensation PPD works

Illinois uses the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, 6th Edition, to rate permanent partial disability (PPD). The PPD rate is 60% of your average weekly wage (AWW), and benefits are paid for a number of weeks based on the body part and the impairment rating. For major body parts (arm, leg, hand, foot), Illinois applies a 500-week maximum on PPD benefits.

The scheduled-loss method multiplies your compensation rate by the scheduled weeks for the body part and by your impairment rating (as a percentage). Settlements often fall between 85% and 125% of the scheduled award, reflecting negotiation, litigation risk, and future medical needs. Illinois does not use a "whole person" impairment cap the way some states do, but the 500-week ceiling limits exposure for extremity injuries.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to file an Illinois workers' comp claim? You must notify your employer within 45 days of the accident, and file a claim with the Illinois Workers' Compensation Commission generally within 3 years of the accident or 2 years of the last benefit payment, whichever is later.

Can I settle my Illinois workers' comp case? Yes. Most Illinois cases resolve with a lump-sum settlement contract approved by an arbitrator at the Commission. Once approved, the settlement is generally final — you cannot reopen it if your condition worsens.

Does Illinois use the AMA Guides 6th Edition? Yes. Illinois courts and the Commission rely on the AMA Guides 6th Ed. for impairment ratings, which feed into the PPD calculation this estimator approximates.
